Punny Monday

Funniness and cleverness have always been two notable factors for rating puns, but the third has groan in significance.

Look What I Found

Perfect timing for the September 29 Faces Challenge!
Just when I was lamenting that all the magazines do lately is keep repeating the same ‘ole techniques and styles, along comes a whole magazine dedicated to FACES!
I’m reading it S-L-O-W-L-Y, digesting every little tidbit.
I’m half way through and I think I can recommend it…. (by page six I had already ordered three of the books they endorsed!)
I bought the hard copy but it also comes in digital form for anyone who finds it difficult to find on their local newsstand.

I Miss Trees

Wherever we moved the number one requirement on my mother’s wish list for a house was TREES. There had to be trees! Lots of trees! The second item on that list was a good school district….. priorities, you know :-/

I guess I’ve inherited her love/need/desire/obsession with trees.
The problem is….here in the sunny, coastal, sub tropical Florida wetlands there aren’t many trees except palm trees….. and they don’t count.  The trees we do have were imported from elsewhere and the city has now embarked on a mission to eliminate ALL non native species.
What I’m saying is they’re plowing down all the trees and it’s freaking SUNNY here!

Shade! I need shade!

Did you know the difference in temperature between being in blaring direct sunlight or under the dappled leafy cooling goodness of shade can be up to 15°!
Now I ask you, would you rather be sitting outside in 90° with the sun sizzling your skin (and believe me, the sun really IS stronger here than it is up north) or would you be more likely to enjoy your outside pleasures in a lovely breezy 80°?
It’s a no brainer!

I totally understand the city wanting to remove invasive flora. And, in their defense, they are putting sun shades over some of the playgrounds in the parks. But that doesn’t help me! I know I’m being selfish. But I long for the shady loveliness of the parks I grew up in.

I miss Heckscher Park.

In my teenage years it was the place you went to ‘hang out’ with your friends. We’d laugh and talk, exchange intellectual ideas, maybe someone brought a guitar and we’d listen for hours. On Saturday nights you went to listen to your boyfriend’s band play onstage. There was always a cool breeze whispering through the trees on a summer evening. The smell of cannabis wafting through the night air...…..

As I grew older it was pleasant to walk around the lake and commune with nature. When I was pregnant it was good exercise. Then pushing a stroller it was a nice way to get out of the house. Later still, when the boys were old enough, there was the playground.

I never knew I would miss the sound the wind makes as it blows through the leaves and branches of deciduous trees.
I miss a nice park. I miss shade. I miss trees!
I have fond memories of summer days here.

My Father Had a Twisted Sense of Humor

He was the guy who, when you stepped into the elevator, would say, “I bet you’re wondering why I gathered you all here today” to all the people already there.

He used to give his name as Dr. to M’aitre d’s to ensure better treatment.

One of the best ‘weird conduct in public places’ I ever saw him do was on the boardwalk in Ocean City.
We were discussing human behavior when he said, “Watch this!”

He walked out into the middle of the crowded boardwalk and stood there looking up towards the sky.
Just standing there, staring up.
At nothing.

After a few minutes other people stopped and started looking  up.
Someone asked what they were looking at and my father just pointed up and said nothing.
More and more people stopped and looked.

After a few minutes he slowly backed away from the gathering crowd, looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and said, “See what I mean?”

ThrowBack Thursday

I got a call from BigBrother a while ago. He said, “Are you near your computer? Go Google our old address in Pennsylvania. I’ll wait.”
I found the Zillow listing........

What it looked like when we lived there.
What it looks like now.
Nice landscaping.

He said, "Keep looking."
This used to be our small screened in porch!!!!!!
Holy crap!!!!
We obviously didn't see the potential!

I Am Verbose OR Not So Much Wordless Wednesday

Okay, let’s face it, I’m a chatty Cathy. There’s no two ways about it, I like to pontificate.
I come by it honestly. My father was long-winded too. My mother used to say, “Ask him what time it is and he’ll tell you how to make a watch!”
I still find that amusing.

So this whole Wordless Wednesday thing is kinda’ difficult for me……….. (annie! LOL)

He Loves Me

You know you’re truly loved when you get up in the morning to find your husband has put a protective pillow next to the infamous ‘toe cruncher’ leg of his recliner before leaving for the day.

Train of Thought

Train of thought is a misnomer.
It suggests your thinking process runs like a train on a linear path. Nice and neat and tidy.

I don’t know about you but my thoughts are nothing like that. Not nice and tidy. Not linear. And definitely not direct.
A more accurate description would be a ‘pinball game of thought’.

Ideas bouncing back and forth, crossing paths, crashing into one another.

Here's an example:

Husband and I are sitting watching an old Kirk Douglas western. One of the characters calls another a ‘chicken livered’ coward. My mind picks up on the ‘chicken liver’ and off I go….

Hmmm, chicken liver. I like chopped chicken liver. There was a deli up north that used to make the BEST chopped liver every Friday. I used to get sandwiches for dinner and bring them home. Chopped liver on freshly baked onion rolls with new pickles on the side. Yum. (Mouth waters a little at the memory.)

I turn to Husband and ask, “Hey, what was the name of that deli in Halesite where we used to get the good chopped liver?”

He gives me the 'husband look'. (You know the one!)
“What in the world made you think of that?” he asks.

As I lead him down the path that is my ‘train of thought’ I notice he is still looking at me strangely and I begin to wonder if it’s me?

Nah, that couldn’t be it………..

The Muse Has Left The Building

Lately I've been feeling decidedly less than inspired. Just can’t seem get the creative juices flowing.
It happens….
So, the other night I spent the evening watching YouTube videos to see if that would jump start the ‘ole muse.

I came across Roben Marie Smith’s video of leveraging your art by cutting up several faces and putting them back together in different combinations.

Hmmm….I could do that. I have LOTS of faces to choose from! lol

Here’s what developed:

I’m still not satisfied with my background collaging skills but I do like how the faces turned out!

Just a Bit of Nonsense

I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

Punny Monday

How can you tell the difference between a chemist and a plumber?
Ask them to pronounce “unionized.”
