Flash Fiction on a Friday

The dreams started soon after the funeral.
Always the same.
I had to get the new owner out of the house so she had somewhere to come home to.
Even in the dream I wondered how she was going to accomplish it, having been cremated, she had no body to come back in.
Still, in the dream I dutifully crawled on my belly, commando style, up the hill to her house to get rid of the new owner.
The dreams varied only by which house it was. Sometimes it was a crazy quilt conglomeration of all the houses we had ever lived in. But it was still my job to get everyone out in preparation for her return.
Sometimes in the dream I was happy she was coming home. Sometimes I was bothered by it. Sometimes I thought she hadn’t really died and I had sold the house out from under her.
But last night’s dream was different.
I was already in the house preparing for her arrival, but this time it was MY house, and I heard her say, “It’s time to let some of this stuff go.”
I know she’s right.
I’ve held onto too much of what had been hers. Trying to live in the past and not being fully in the present.
It’s time to let go.
After eighteen years I think I finally can.

Funny how the mind works isn’t it?

Throwback Thursday

This was my absolute FAVORITE dress. It was red dotted swiss with no less than THREE petticoats! I wore it until I couldn’t squeeze into it anymore then I put it on my
Patty-Play-Pal doll. It was a perfect fit for her!

My Claim to Fame

When I was in modeling school one of the classes they taught was how to do the ‘model slouch’ and walk down a runway. THAT lesson has come in handy over the years! LOL

But I digress…..

One day while we were practicing the slouch/walk/turn they gave us new shoes.
Mine were lime green with blue polka dots.
And as we walked the elevated runway there was a man taking our pictures.

Not pictures of us turning and slouching and walking for our portfolios but pictures of our feet.

Just our feet.

We were told he was hired by Montgomery Ward (the big Mail Order Catalog Company.)
He was taking pictures of the new line of shoes they would be offering in the next catalog.
We were all very excited. Fame and fortune awaited us!

We waited with bated breath for the new catalog and when it came we anxiously paged to the shoe section!
There in all their glory were the shoes we had been given to ‘model’!
But how could you tell if it was OUR feet or not? The pictures were cropped so tightly all you saw were the shoes.
Not even our ankles showed!

To this day it’s still my one and only claim to fame in the modeling world!

Hey, I take fame where I can get it!

What Do Those Codes On Stickers Of Fruits And Some Veggies Mean?

Although they seem like a nuisance, the stickers or labels attached to fruit and some vegetables have more of a function than helping scan the price at the checkout stand. The PLU code, or price lookup number printed on the sticker, also tells you how the fruit was grown. By reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides.
Here are the basics of what you should know:
1.       If there are only four numbers in the PLU, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides. The last four letters of the PLU code are simply what kind of vegetable or fruit. An example is that all bananas are labeled with the code of 4011.
2.       If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “8”, this tells you that the item is a genetically modified fruit or vegetable. Genetically modified fruits and vegetables trump being organic. So, it is impossible to eat organic produce that are grown from genetically modified seeds. A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011
3.       If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “9”, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is not genetically modified. An organic banana would be: 94011

Incidentally, the adhesive used to attach the stickers is considered food-grade, but the stickers themselves aren’t edible.
Just thought I'd share because I never knew this.

Twitchy Belly

Overall he was quite tall and lean, except for his beach ball of a belly. My father dubbed him twitchy belly because when he laughed his belly bobbed up and down taking his belt buckle on an erratic ride for its life.  (It was difficult not to giggle every time I saw him.)

Two things I remember about Twitchy Belly.

He was really quite arrogant when it came to the fact that he and his wife were in couples counseling. He raved about how much it was helping them become closer and more loving towards one another. He offered to share his new found knowledge with my parents and help them over what was apparently a rough spot they were having.

So, on Saturdays, he would come to the house to ‘counsel’ them. I was told to stay in my room when he was there. After the first Saturday I learned not to be home when he came.

The second thing I remember about him was that on these Saturdays, while he was at our house ‘helping’ my parents, his wife was at their house systematically removing all the contents until finally one Saturday afternoon he returned home to find an empty house and a note from his wife saying she had left him for the marriage counselor.

True story.

Still Not Feeling Up To Snuff

I’m not sure how many of you I vented to about not feeling well, but for those of you I did ‘dump’ on thank you for your well wishes. They helped more than you know!

I’m better but still not cookin’ on all burners.
I know this because for well over a week now the prezzies I bought myself for Christmas have sat on the coffee table without my ONCE picking one up!

I still don’t have the energy to do much but I thought I’d give my new sketchbook a try and this is how far I got before needing a nap, lol.
