Confessions of a Picky Eater

According to my mother I was an incredibly picky eater when I was a kid. Even as a baby I made my likes and dislikes vividly apparent. Family lore has it I ruined her favorite cashmere sweater after tasting strained beets for the first time.
I put that one on her. I mean…….really? Wearing your favorite cashmere sweater to feed your child strained beets is just asking for trouble…… (and just so you know, I still don’t like beets….)

I think it has more to do with texture than taste. That and certain things just don’t ‘go’ together.
For example: Whipped cream on Jell-O.
NO.
Just no.
Jell-O is clear and whipped cream is opaque….you don’t mix the two.
The same goes for sour cream in Stroganoff. She used to have to take my portion out of the pot before she added the sour cream.

And don’t even get me started on legumes! Chick peas???? Please! They are little balls of mealy wax that have no discernible taste as far as I can tell! ALL of the legume family to me is tasteless and like eating wet sand.
I shiver here just thinking about it!

But all that changed when I met Husband. He will eat anything. And I mean ANYTHING!
One night, when we were dating, he offered me a taste of what he was having and I naturally declined.
He said, “Okay, more for me!” In that one simple sentence he changed my entire epicurean life! He wasn’t trying to sway me or cajole me or entice me or control me! So I tried it! And you know what?????
I was right!
It was AWFUL!

I’m not quite as picky as I used to be but I wouldn’t say I’m adventurous either.

Except for that time I ate a handful of chocolate covered ants.

But that was a trick. And as soon as they told me what it was, I immediately threw up…….so I don’t think it counts.

  1. I eat everything and way back when I used to travel, the most interesting thing was to taste local specialties.

  2. The Eldest had the same reaction when I fed her beets for the first time. I was not wearing a favorite cashmere sweater. I like pickled beets, but not cooked beets. I'm not a huge fan of Jell-o, but like it with whipped cream. My dad liked to pour a little milk on top of his. I don't really like sour cream, but hidden in stroganoff or used in baked goods is ok. I don't dollop my tacos with it. I'm not adventurous in my eating either. Don't like hot and spicy or trendy foo foo fare. Give me good, solid comfort food.

    1. Oh, and I would have had the same reaction to find out I'd eaten chocolate covered ants.

  3. We were a family with 6 kids and we all learned very early to eat what was put in front of us. Period. No coddling attall. Once I was caught by Dad spitting my liver into my cup. He made me eat every bite. But, no, that memory doesn't bother me anymore. Not at all. Thanks, Dad.

  5. chocolate covered ants !!?? Yuk! Does that even exist? I must admit I was the same. I also happen to think that certain things just don't go together. I was a really picky eater until I went to the US to study for one year. My host mom said I had no right to say I didn't want anything until I had tried it. So I did, grudgingly, but since that year I must say I went from being a picky eater to eating almost anything ... ;-)

  6. i've never been a picky eater. Me? I'll try anything once. If I don't like it, then I put it on my list of "Things Never to Eat Again." So far that list is short: Liver & Onions, Beets, and Bologna.

P.S. How can you not like Jello with whipped cream? That was considered an elegant dessert in our house when i was growing up!!
