The Muse is Back

You know how ‘they’ are always telling us to stretch and grow and ‘get out of our comfort zone’? I disagree. Sometimes what I want is to be ‘in’ my comfort zone and make some nice sketches that I feel proud of and get a confidence boost! THEN maybe I’ll feel like I can venture into the unknown and stretch myself……

Like these……
I LOVE doing blind contours! It takes all the pressure off. You can be as sloppy as you want and they still have a ‘charm’ to them! I almost always like the outcome…..well, maybe not the profile guy……but the rest of them have their own kind of charisma.
I also got a chance to use my new ‘grease pencil’ or is it a china marker? It’s the old fashioned kind you get at the local hardware store. Carpenters use them. They can be used on almost any kind of surface….which make them perfect for mixed media work. They worked great on this toned paper and over the colored pencils I used.
Then, of course, I had to take one into the digital realm and play…..
Aaaaand, she’s back! (At least I think I am…..I hope…..)

  1. Oh, these are fabulous, Robin! Truly, the muse is back.
I must try that grease pencil, I remember those pencils from my childhood, we used to draw with them on brown wrapping paper, which was the only kind of paper back then, no money for anything else.

I'll be off again for some days, see you soon!

  2. Can I just say, I told you so? I knew it? No, I wouldn't do that. I LOVE seeing these here and on instagram. Very cool.

  3. I agree, sometimes it needs the comfort zone to get past the block. These are charming. That’s a good way to term blind contour as they always end up wonky but fun!

  5. I knew it! Welcome back :-) I love these contour drawings, and I especially like the colour combo with the blue pencil. Whenever I do blind contour, my lines end up on opposite sides of the paper, it doesn't even resemble a face. Yours are very good.

  6. Is the China marker the kind with paper around the point that you pull to get more point or sharpen it? Glad your muse came back

  7. I'm happy for you that your muse is back and she did a great job. The faces are fabulous, Robin! If I would try that I'd probably end up with a chaotic scribble that wouldn't have any similarity with a face.
