Diabetes, Take Two

It’s been several months now since I became a member of the diabetes club.  It’s not so bad, really.
Once you get over the cravings.
Mostly….……(I still miss bread.)

This whole new ‘lifestyle’ comes with some side effects, though.
Some are good, I’ve lost some weight.
Some are, well, just plain weird!

I’ve always had vivid dreams.
But I’ve never had dreams like these!

For the past week I’ve dreamed of a GIANT red velvet cupcake!
It’s HUGE!
ENORMOUS!
COLOSSAL!
Tall and lovely ………..blood red with buttery cream cheese frosting!

Sometimes I slice it into pieces with an enormous knife.
Other times I climb a tall ladder to reach the frosting.
And it’s DELICIOUS!
The BEST cupcake I’ve ever eaten.
And when I’m done eating I always feel guilty. Like I’m going to be sent to the principal’s office for misbehaving!

I’m hoping it’s just a phase.
Please tell me it’s just a phase and this too shall pass.
Because if I have this to look forward to every night I can see I’m headed for a huge fall off the sugar free wagon!
My subconscious is trying to undermine my waking resolve.

And it knows I have no willpower!

  1. That's interesting. Our sub conscious doesn't usually do us in so I wonder what the dream is telling you. Maybe it's saying you've taken on an enormous task but the reward will be sweet. I'll try to remember to look it up in my dream book tomorrow. Recurring dreams definitely are messages from the sub conscious! My daughter can't eat bread anymore either not even pizza but it's because she's sensitive to wheat and allergic to yeast! She eats a type that we make in the microwave when she's really craving a sandwich. It's made mostly of egg and brown rice flour. Can you have eggs? I can send you the recipe to try.

  2. I didn't realise you had become a member of the diabetes club Robin, or at least my brain had forgotten that. Glad you are coping with it, but sorry about the cupcake dream....still, don't worry it's the giant cheesecake you've got to watch out for! ;)

  3. Oh my goodness! I don't know what to say…except maybe…if you believe it will hurt you…it will. I really hope this craving goes away for you…and I'm really proud of you for giving up what you have. You can do this!

  4. Oh how awful, Robin. Does it mean you can never indulge or can you eat cake once in a while?

  7. sorry to hear about your diabetes, it is a common condition. I think you should have a small bit of cupcake to ease your craving.

  8. My husband loves food - he is a foodie, and can not go without his treats. When he joined the diabetic club (10 years ago? ) they tried him with medication, but since he wouldn't change his eating habits (which are mostly healthy, but include bread and cookies etc.) he had to take insulin. He is much happier this way - eating whatever he wants and controlling his blood sugar levels with injections of insulin. Not necessarily the route to go for everyone, but so far it is working well for him. I hope you find a comfortable way that works for you.

  9. My dream book says dreams of sweets "will either come as a signal to take time out to do the things you love, or as a warning that you are skipping the basics in lie and trying only to experience the frosting" and "on the other hand, if you're living life as though it is a jail sentence and not allowing ourself the lovely moments that are full of rewards, your dreams of going after sweets ma be a heartfelt signal to give yourself a break". Basically it sounds like you are having a difficult time accepting the diabetic lifestyle doesn't it? One lady I knew who was diabetic was allowed angel food cake as it was light in fat and sugar as compared to other sweets. Can you have whole grain breads (the fiber can fight off the sugar rush to the bloodstream)? Talk to your doctor or a dietician and see if there aren't ways to get a few sweets and breads into your life again to keep you happy.
