The Reason I Flunked Spanish Wasn’t Really My Fault
For some reason, in my junior year of high
school, the assistant principal elected himself my emotional/ethical guardian.
That is to say, he made it his business to
dissuade me from dating my boyfriend.
He deemed the match unacceptable and took
it upon himself to talk me out of it.
The tack he decided to take was to ‘reason’
me out of it.
To that end, every day during second period
(and I assumed he waited until second period so that he could have his morning
coffee and steel himself to face me) the phone in my Spanish class would ring
and he would call me to his office.
It got to be such a regular event; the
teacher moved my seat next to the phone and told me to answer it when it rang.
And so it went.
Every day.
His concern was that I was making a HUGE mistake and ruining my life!
After I got over being angry that he was
sticking his nose into something that was none of his business I kind of
enjoyed these daily diatribes.
I’m always up for a good argument, and I
came back at him with some very sound and defendable lines of reasoning.
Plus it got me out of Spanish class.
And let’s face it, that was a good thing!
Until I got my report card……….

Two

Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and
heat it too.

When I was little I had two best friends.
Janet and Rita.
We played well together.
Most of the time.
But…..when things didn’t go her way, Janet would throw a
tantrum.
It was always the same….…. “If you don’t do what I want I’m
going to sit in the road and get hit by a car! THEN you’ll be sorry!”
And she would sit cross-legged, in the middle of our
street (it was a lane really, with very few cars) put her face in her hands and
cry.
I remember thinking……would it really be that bad if she did
get hit by a car? ……..at least then we wouldn’t have to go through this
nonsense all the time (I was famous for my empathy…….)
One day the pavement in the road in front of Rita’s house developed
a hole about the size of a Frisbee.
Not very big but when you looked down into the hole you could see that the dirt had washed away and it was
developing into a sinkhole.
To us it looked like it went to the center of the earth!
Of course this was just the thing Janet needed for her
next big performance.
And that show came very soon after the discovery of said
hole.
We were playing at Rita’s house, Janet didn’t get her way……she
went into her usual tirade but this time she said, “I’m going to sit on the
hole and get swallowed up by the earth!
THEN you’ll be sorry!”
And off she went.
I noticed though, as she took up her position, she didn’t sit directly on top of the hole but
off to the side.
Rita and I stood there watching and waiting.
I’m not sure if we were watching in gleeful anticipation of
Janet getting swallowed alive or if we were just tired of the routine.
After a few minutes we grew bored and went inside to play.
When Janet realized no one was watching she got up and went
home.
I know, it seemed anticlimactic to me too……..

Whenever I Do Battle With A Palmetto Bug I Think Of My Mother
And about her time in Florida when my father was stationed
here during the war.
She told two stories about that time.
The first was about how the bugs were so big you could throw
a saddle on them and ride them around the base!
The other was about working for one of the generals.
She and another secretary would buy bottles of coke from
the vending machine just outside the office door, pour out half the coke and
refill the bottles with rum.
And that’s how they spent their days.
Typing the general’s letters half crocked, sweating (this
was in the days before air conditioning!) and killing giant bugs with their
shoes.
She did NOT like Florida!

Another Late Night Encounter with Nature…. the Battle Continues
It’s late at night.
I’m sitting at my desk working diligently (aka cruising Facebook…)
and out of the corner of my eye I spy a movement on the desk.
I watch in horror as he walks along the edge of the desk.
S-L-O-W-L-Y….
Only inches away from me.
As if he doesn’t have a care in the world.
No, he didn’t just walk, he sauntered!
He swaggered! As if to say, “Ha! I terrify you! And I’m too
big to kill! So there!”
My first reaction is a combination of fear and disgust.
I’m so close to him I can see the hair on his legs!
YUCK!
I think of waking Husband but that seems too sissy.
I consider letting him continue on his way, but then I’d
know he was OUT THERE…..SOMEWHERE and that idea is just too disturbing.
So I gather up my courage, reach for a napkin and lunge!
GOT HIM!
I run to the bathroom and shake him out of the napkin into
the toilet…..because I have this compulsive need to see that he’s actually THERE. I need to watch him circle the
porcelain sea and disappear into the abyss.
I flush three times….just to be sure he doesn’t don his SCUBA
gear and work his way back up the pipes.
As I settle back down in my chair triumphant in the knowledge
that, once again, the balance of nature is intact....................
I observe a trail of little spots across the desk….…..he was
so big he left footprints in the desk blotter!

I Dreamed…………..
Last night I dreamed my mother called me from ‘heaven’ or
wherever it is you go when you die.
She said, “Get up! You’re going to be late!”
I realized the call was something special and I started
crying.
I said, “Is it really you? Can we do this again” I miss you!
Did you get to see Uncle Bill?”
(My uncle just died a few weeks ago.)
She said yes she saw her brother and no we can’t do this
again.
Then I woke up.
And there were real tears running down my cheeks.
I wondered what it was I was going to be late for and looked
at the clock…......it read 8:11…..........
my mother’s birthday.
*Sometimes I wonder if I should share these things. I
imagine you think I’m weird enough without these little insights into my psyche…… LOL

The Undo Button Is the Best……..
But what I also like about working digitally is the ability
to save incrementally as you go.
To save at different times through the process allows you to
go back later and take it in a whole different direction.
Or to just have a ‘time lapse’ of the characters development.
Either way…….
Some changes are bigger than others...... ;)
