Another Face

If you read my blog you know I’ve been working on a series of faces in Carla Sonheim’s
‘Y is forYellow’ class. I wanted to try and improve my skill with watercolor and I’ve been struggling and uncomfortable with the process.
This latest face sat prepped and ready for paint on my easel but I kept avoiding it. Then today, as I was passing it for the umpteenth time, an idea popped into my head and I wondered ‘what if?’………
I wonder how my Copic markers would react on top of the Gesso?  Would it ruin the markers? Would they even work on the gesso? Would I be able to blend them?
So I gave it a whirl.
I like it so far.
The markers worked just as well as on card stock, maybe even a bit better when it came to blending.  And this is how it sits on my work table.

This is the point where I get ‘stuck’.
Choices to be made and I’m mired in indecision……What color should her hair be?  What color eyes? I was going to make her glasses a bright red for interest……
Any suggestions greatly appreciated but not necessarily taken…..I’m contrary that way! ;)

  1. Excellent Robin. I won't make any suggestions as to eyes or hair colouring, I know you will make a great choice yourself :)

  2. My glasses are red :D

Great work and as Ann pointed out, you're going to make a good choice yourself.

I decided to skip 29faces this time, don't have the energy and inspiration.

  4. I love your face! It has so much character! And Carla is great - her classes are so fun! I have some Copics but have only used them a handful. I bought them as an easy go-to travel kit. I love the skin tones you created and the subtle tones. Now I want to bring them out again! :)

  5. ...and if you do red glasses perhaps light green eyes would be nice...as for the hair... I kind of like it white! Is that cheating? ;)

  6. copic markers are so versatile! i never would have thought to use them on gesso. good thinking! skintones are hard to get right. i made myself a "cheat sheet" in watercolor (a little pink, a little orange, maybe a little yellow) and rosy cheeks to finish off!

red glasses sound great! you'll have to experiment with the rest. if you have gesso, you can always start over again!!

  7. Looks a lot like watercolour actually. Love this lady, so much character. I think she would look great with dark red hair ... ;-)
