Is It Just Me???

Our local news station has implemented a new segment to their nightly news show.  It called ‘Storm Chasers’…..or something like that. They send out a reporter and driver to report on the weather ‘as it’s happening’…..from inside the truck, you know, just to be safe!

I have issues with this. First, wouldn’t they be safer reporting from inside the TV station? Secondly…..it’s RAINING people! It’s what happens in the summertime in a subtropical climate!!!!

Have we all become such children that we need someone to tell us to come in out of the rain???? To tell us lightning is dangerous? That rain may cause flooding? That you shouldn’t drive into/through standing water if you don’t know how deep it may be?

And it’s not JUST the weather.

I feel like they are hyping the ‘news’ more and more lately. Pretty soon it’s going to be called The Nightly News with Chicken Little reporting!

There is such a thing a personal responsibility. It’s not the job of the government, or local authorities, or even the newscasters to tell me I need to come in out of the rain to be safe. If I haven’t learned some basic lessons by now it’s my problem, not theirs.

Is it just me? Is it the local station here? Are they doing this everywhere now?

Or have I become that cranky old man yelling “GET OFF MY LAWN!”

  2. Sometimes, I think they hope for some sort of a disaster. Like yesterday afternoon we had some thunderstorms. A cell was particularly fierce, the weather dudes took over the entire afternoon broadcast, saying how this cell could spawn a tornado. Fortunately, it didn't, but I'm sure a lot of people were panicked and I bet the weather dudes were disappointed that we didn't have a tornado. Sheesh. If the news isn't sensational then it's just infotainment.

  3. Recently our local news hyped a story with - What happened to the house that used to be at this address?. It ended up being a story about so severely blighted homes with back tax issues, that the only option available to the local government was to raze the house. That was the 'Big' story of the night too... a real exciting area we live in.

  4. I used to say to my son. Watch the news so you know what's going on in the world. Now I watch as little news as possible. I agree with you Robin. In the UK we call it Nannieing.
