Sometimes Finished is Better Than Nothing

You know that saying ‘Done is better than perfect’?
I’ve taken it a step further…..’Done is better than nothing’!

I seem to be in that cycle of everything I touch turns to s**t mode lately.  (And it doesn’t help that I need to be getting ready for a gift fair in December!)
But I’m trudging along anyway.

So, in the name of truth in blogging I’m posting the shitty posts/illustrations anyway. (Just in case you think that everything we do is supposed to be good, here’s the proof that we ALL stink sometimes!)

This is just a silly little memory that popped into my head the other day.
I was watching King Kong (the 1933 version) on TV. Well, not really watching but it was on in the background.
And it sparked a memory of the first time I saw it.
I was at Phyllis Davenport’s house.

And the most vivid memory I have of Phyllis Davenport is how I envied her hair!

(Side note: my mother always kept my hair short and in a ‘pixie’ cut. She thought it was cute.
I always wanted LONG hair that would hang down and brush the ground when I tipped back on the swings like Phyllis Davenport’s hair did!)

I can still remember how she would lean way back as she pumped on the swings and her hair would flow out behind her and brush the ground.

I have NO idea why I thought that was so cool.
Looking back on it now it’s kind of yucky! LOL

So here is a totally lousy illustration of that memory:

But I had to get it out of my head and down on ‘paper’. (I’m not fishing for compliments so please don’t feel obligated to say anything nice! LOL)

  1. Why do you think I would say anything nice!...lol - seriously your drawing is brilliant, can't think why you don't like it. You are right about everyone doing 'stink' work sometimes, I definitely do, my bin proves it! lol.

  2. I think you're too hard on yourself. Here's a little exercise. Draw a picture of your inner critic. Take your drawing and put it in an envelope and seal it. Ignore the muffled cries of your inner critic.

I had a Pixie cut, too. Still wear my hair very short. Long hair sweeping the ground would be very cool, until it was time to wash all the bugs and dirt out of your hair, and brush all the twigs, leaves and grass out of the tangles. Ouchies!

  3. :) I hear you - on I-stink-days as well as on wanting someone else's hair ;) I love your drawing because you went & did it. I'm having days like that all the time - I love what CJ says about drawing the IC, sealing it in an envelope and ignore its muffled cries. I think that's effectively what you're doing when you have a day like that and you draw anyway. That rocks! Good on you!

  4. My hair was long enough to brush the ground when I was on the swing, which I was a lot, but I knew better than to let it get really dirty! But I have my 5 year old daughter's hair cut in a just below the chin angled bob. It's just long enough that I can put it up into a sort of topknot for her ballet classes and do headband braids or other hairstyles. She talks about growing out, but loves going to the salon to get it cut, so I leave it as the status quo. She hates having it brushed, and knows that if it was longer it would have more tangles. We're also in a super hot carribean climate, so short hair is sort of a must (although all the Colombians don't seem to know this!). My hair is also short (and has been since I was about 11 and chopped it all off), but I do remember seeing Crystal Gail on TV when I was 4 and wanting her floor length hair.

  5. But, she's sooo cute, Robin! And you just went and DID it, and that's the point. And you did it beautifully!
I too, had wanted long hair but had a pixie cut. My mother cut mine, bangs and all.

  6. I've been having some of those days too. I made a shoe bag for a friend's birthday last week that was a lot of work...but just didn't make the cut. Gave it to Hillary who was tickled with it because they'll be traveling a lot in the next year if all goes as they expect. I didn't even take a picture of it. And...I think your rendition of Phyllis is wonderful, and happy and sweet.

  7. you know what this reminds me of? Lucy from Peanuts having some time off from her psychiatrist booth!
I actually do like the fun and freedom of it - and you never paid me for saying something nice
